Afridi and Noman crush Proteas in first test

- Shaheen Afridi took three wickets in four overs to finish off South Africa’s second innings and hand Pakistan a strong first test win.
- Noman Ali claimed 10 wickets in the match, earning his third 10-wicket haul in just 21 test matches for Pakistan.
Pakistan beat South Africa by 93 runs on the fourth day of the first test match in Lahore on Wednesday.
Shaheen Afridi took 4 wickets for 33 runs in the second innings, finishing off the Proteas with three wickets in the last four overs. South Africa were bowled out for 183 while chasing a target of 277.
Afridi’s late spell, along with Noman Ali’s 4 for 79, sealed the win.
Tony de Zorzi gave South Africa hope with a century in the first innings. Senuran Muthusamy also impressed with the ball, taking 11 wickets for 174 runs across both innings.
Dewald Brevis tried to fight back with a second innings score of 54, but Pakistan’s bowlers proved too strong.
Noman Ali now has three 10-wicket hauls in just 21 test matches.
It was a big win for Pakistan, who will want to carry this form into the final test in Rawalpindi next week.
South Africa, who are the current World Test Champions, need a win to avoid losing the series.
Proteas captain Aiden Markram admitted they didn’t do enough with the bat: “Quite a few of us made good starts but we weren’t able to push on and get the big scores which make a difference, apart from Tony in the first innings. When you get in, especially in tricky conditions like these, you’ve got to on and make it count.”
He added: “I’m not sure what conditions will be like in Rawalpindi but I can’t see it being too different from this.”
