Armed men pose as crime wardens in Soweto clinic robbery

  • Armed men dressed as Gauteng Crime Wardens robbed staff at Chiawelo clinic in Soweto of their phones and wallets.
  • Nurses are refusing night shifts and asking to be moved to other clinics after the traumatic armed robbery.

Robbers wearing uniforms of Gauteng Crime Wardens stormed into Chiawelo clinic in Soweto and stole from staff at gunpoint on Tuesday.

The gang, dressed as Amapanyaza (crime wardens), took cellphones and wallets from terrified workers.

Scared nurses are now asking to be moved to other clinics, with some refusing to work night shifts after the attack.

On Wednesday morning, nurses and community members protested outside the clinic, demanding better security.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed police are looking for the suspects.

“The victims were robbed of their personal items including cellphones and wallets. No one has been arrested yet. Police investigations are continuing,” he said.

A message shared on a community WhatsApp group claimed ten men were involved in the robbery.

The message said the men “were wearing uniforms similar to that of Amapanyapanya” when they “attacked and robbed the staff of their valuables including cellphones and cash.”

Lt-Col Masondo said the police did not write this message.

A nurse, who asked not to be named, said staff members are traumatised. “The incident has left many staff traumatised and demotivated,” she said.

Lt-Col Masondo urged people with information to call the police on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPSApp.

The clinic remains closed while police hunt for the robbers.
