At least 20 diamond miners killed in horror bus crash

Compiled by staff writer

At least 20 people have died after a bus carrying diamond miners collided with a truck in Limpopo on Sunday evening.

The bus was travelling to the Venetia mine in Musina, close to the Zimbabwe border, when the truck collided head-on with it between 5pm and 6pm.

Footage taken in the aftermath of the crash shows that the truck was completely burnt out. Arezwothe Protection Services have confirmed that most victims died at the scene.

Visiting the site on Monday, Limpopo transport minister Florence Radzilani criticised the condition of trucks driving on rural roads in the province.

“We always talk to our law enforcement officers and send out messages to these drivers to say they must make sure the vehicle is roadworthy so that you don’t put the lives of innocent people at risk,” she told SABC.

“We are waiting on investigators but there are already allegations about the truck driver not having a licence and the truck not being roadworthy.”

Venetia mine is owned by De Beers and is the country’s largest diamond producer.
