Bafana’s Broos and Chiefs’ Nabi chat over coffee

Bafana coach Hugo Broos shared that he recently had a coffee and chat with Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi, which allowed him to get to know the Tunisian better.

Broos said they live in the same building.

“When I came back from Belgium, I didn’t know he was living in the same building I live in.”

“Someone from Kaizer Chiefs came to me and said, ‘Coach, coach Nabi wants to speak to you.”

Broos was sitting and drinking coffee, and so was Nabi, so he spoke with him.

Broos said he was impressed by Nabi and his work at Kaizer Chiefs, even though the team has yet to play a competitive match this season.

“And yeah, he is a very good coach,” Broos said. “I think you can see that what’s happening at Chiefs is different.

“He thinks like a European coach. He knows what he wants, and it might be a bit easier for him to achieve that at Chiefs. It’s not easy to be a coach at Chiefs.”

The Soweto giants have recently lost some high-profile friendly matches, including a 4-0 defeat to Young Africans in the Toyota Cup and a 3-0 loss to TS Galaxy.

However, Broos is confident about Nabi’s abilities.

“I have said in the past. It’s not normal that a team like Chiefs is seventh or eighth in the competition. It’s not good for South African football.

“So, I hope that Chiefs is back next season to fight with Sundowns, Pirates, and maybe SuperSport or Stellenbosch. Maybe we will have five or six teams fighting for the title, for the championship.”

Broos said it would be a big improvement for South African football if there was no longer one team dominating, as in the last five years.

During Broos’ time as Bafana coach, Chiefs players struggled to secure national team spots.
