Battle lines drawn for MTN8 title clash
Cape Town City will push for a second MTN8 title, while Sekhukhune United wants their first-ever trophy in the top-flight league when the two sides clash in a quarter-final match at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The Citizens won the 2018 MTN8 under Benni McCarthy but have struggled to claim silverware since then.
They now have a shot at the top-eight competition, and they hope the match against Babina Noko will set the tone for the 2024-25 season.
Coach Eric Tinkler has been busy in the transfer market, signing players like Carlinhos, Fortune Makaringe, Haashim Domingo, and Kamohelo Mokotjo, who will face his former team.
“I know we put together a great squad back in 2016, but I think the depth we have [now] is probably the best squad we have ever had at the club,” Tinkler told the media.
“We know we have a lot of experience mixed with youth, which I think is extremely important.
“Come Saturday, we’ll know whether we have a good team.”
City will start without Khanyisa Mayo, who recently joined the Algeria side of CR Belouizdad.
And Sekhukhune will not want to feel the absence of Elias Mokwana, who joined Tunisian giants Esperance last week.
But the arrival of experienced players Thabang Monare, Shaune Mogaila and Njabulo Ngcobo, who was signed from Kaizer Chiefs, could carry the day for Babina Noko.
“It’s going to be an exciting fixture. We know what Cape Town City can bring on the day,” said Sekhukhune captain Linda Mntambo.
“Ever since they got their status from Mpumalanga Black Aces, they’ve never really changed their identity. They’ve always been a team that plays on the front foot.”
He said the way they played last season and how they prevented Sundowns from an invincible season shows what a good team they are.
Reports earlier this week suggest that Sekhukhune coach Peter Hyballa clashed with some of his players, and the club said they were considering bringing back Lehlohonolo Seema.
