• The South African Football Association plans a one-year deal for Hugo Broos after Bafana reached the World Cup knockout stages.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) plans to offer Hugo Broos another year as Bafana Bafana coach.

The new deal would keep the 74-year-old in charge during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, according to GOAL.

Broos had said he could retire after the Fifa World Cup, while SAFA had already started looking for a new coach.

But SAFA now wants to keep the team settled after Broos led Bafana into the World Cup knockout stages for the first time.

His current contract was due to end this month.

Former Bafana players Teko Modise and Josta Dladla have backed the plan to keep him.

Modise said Broos has built a strong bond with his players and knows how to get the best from them.

“You want a coach the players can relate to,” he told SABC Sport.

Dladla praised Broos for trusting young and little-known players.

“Youngsters came up and no-name players came into the camp with confidence,” he said. “If he is staying, for me, that is a good thing.”

The possible new deal leaves questions about SAFA’s search for Broos’s replacement.

Its technical committee was reportedly already far into the process. Former Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane had also been linked with the job.

South Africa begins its 2027 Afcon qualifiers against Guinea-Conakry and Eritrea in September.
