Bus passenger left stranded then robbed after route change
- A Cape Town bus passenger was robbed after the driver changed routes and dropped her at night in an area she did not know.
- Golden Arrow says they won’t pay for stolen items but will punish the driver who went off route.
A Golden Arrow passenger is seeking compensation after being robbed when a bus driver dropped her “in the middle of nowhere” in Cape Town.
The woman took the 5:30 pm bus from Langa to Khayelitsha when the driver deviated from the usual route.
“I went to the driver to ask him why he was changing directions. I was shocked to hear him say that he had asked if anyone was going in my direction. Since when do bus drivers ask that?” she said.
The driver refused to return to her route and dropped her off in an area she did not know. She was subsequently robbed.
“It was their driver’s fault that I was robbed. Suspending him won’t make a difference because, after suspension, he will go back to work while I will have to find money to replace what was stolen,” she said.
Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen Dyker-Beyer confirmed they received the complaint.
“Unfortunately, as per our conditions of carriage, Golden Arrow cannot accept liability for the consequences of a criminal act.
“In cases such as these, we would advise passengers to remain on the bus until it reaches the depot, where arrangements can be made to assist,” said Dyker-Beyer.
The driver now faces disciplinary action.
