Cape Town girls’ school gets tech boost
- Sentech has donated 30 tablets and projectors to help girls at Molo Mhlaba School in Khayelitsha.
- The school hopes the technology will help create paperless classrooms and teach computer skills to Grades 6 and 7.
A township girls’ school is set to ride on the digital wave crest soon
The pupils at the Khayelitsha, Cape Town school are getting ready for a digital future thanks to a donation of tablets and projectors from Sentech.
The donation of 30 tablets will help Grade 6 and 7 pupils at Molo Mhlaba School in Harare move towards paperless classrooms.
The relationship began when the school’s principal met Sentech officials at a conference in Cape Town last March.
Dr Rethabile Mashale-Sonibare, the school’s managing director, said they sent their proposal in April. “Eventually, in November, we got confirmation that Sentech was ready to support the initiative,” she said.
The tablets will help prepare the girls for high school by teaching them vital computer skills.
“Having access to a device will help them manage themselves online, run Google Classrooms and use IXL, which is a maths app,” said Mashale-Sonibare.
The tablets will stay at the school when Grade 7s leave, helping future pupils too.
Sentech’s acting CEO Tebogo Leshope said they were moved by the school’s goal of developing young women.
“We value the focused and inspiring effort that Molo Mhlaba is placing on girls. Our strong belief is that these tablets will enable the kids to interface with the world, access information online, learn, and further their studies,” said Leshope.
He hopes some of the girls might work for Sentech one day. “We believe that by doing this we are also creating awareness among them to be aware of what Sentech does, and also to explain the opportunities we have.”
