Cape Town woman feeds hungry families
- Matshidiso Kolobe has given groceries to struggling families in Khayelitsha after helping homeless people since 2018.
- One grateful mother of three says the food means she won’t have to borrow from neighbours anymore.
A Cape Town woman is showing that Ubuntu is alive by feeding 10 hungry families in Khayelitsha.
Matshidiso Kolobe started her mission to help others in 2018 when she began feeding homeless people in the city centre.
“The first people that I assisted were homeless people in the CBD, and they jokingly said they would never rob me because I am treating them like humans even though I don’t know them,” said Kolobe.
She said helping others helps her sleep at night.
“I am not doing this to get anything in return but because I was able to see how much small acts can go a long way for other people. I am doing this to encourage other people to see that even when buying their groceries, just one pack of instant porridge or rice can make a huge difference.”
She encourages everyone she helps to also assist others where they can.
“If we can all take one family and journey with it until they have someone to put food on the table for them, a lot of families will never go to bed hungry. We can become the government by playing our part in the communities, showing that Ubuntu is important and you don’t have to know people before assisting them,” she said.
One grateful recipient, Mandisa Machana, found out about Kolobe’s kindness through Facebook.
“I heard the news on the Facebook page called Ingxaki Zokuhlala that there is a lady who is looking for disadvantaged families. I texted the admin asking to include my name, but it was difficult to believe because nowadays no one helps without wanting anything in return,” said Machana.
The mother of three was struggling to feed her children.
“The food will help a lot because I won’t have to go and ask for food from my neighbours,” said Machana.
Another person who got help lost their job last year.
“To some people, this might look small, but to all of us, it is huge because we won’t have to stress about food for some time. We need more people like Kolobe, and I wish God can bless her with all that she desires,” said the beneficiary.
