Chelsea and Arsenal assert themselves as title contenders

The Gunners were 2-0 victors over Manchester United on Wednesday while Liverpool were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw on Tyneside and Manchester City returned to winning ways.

Mikel Arteta’s side continued to be the Premier League’s corner kings as Arsenal delivered the goods from two second half set-pieces against the Red Devils at the Emirates.

Jurrien Timber and William Saliba got the goals and the clean sheet that sealed them their fourth consecutive league win against Manchester United.

For new United manager Ruben Amorim, it was a first league defeat since December last year and an end to a 34-game unbeaten run for the former Sporting coach in league competition.

At St Mary’s, wholesale changes were the order of the day for Enzo Maresca and Chelsea. But the Blues were still five star in their performance, with five different goalscorers netting in their 5-1 defeat of Southampton.

At St James’ Park, Mohamed Salah 37th different league game with a goal assist helped him overtake Wayne Rooney (36) as the man to have done so on the most occasions in the competition.

The Egyptian appeared to have been the star as the Reds went 3-2 up with seven minutes to play.

Fabian Schar had other plans, though, with Newcastle grabbing a stoppage time equaliser to ensure Arne Slot’s side would not continue their incredible winning run.

Liverpool’s two points dropped draws open the title race yet again, with their lead over Chelsea and Arsenal now down to just seven points.

Their advantage over champions Manchester City, too, has been trimmed to nine — with Pep Guardiola’s boys ending a four game losing run in the league with a big 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Etihad.
