Chiefs hit rock bottom with zero players in Bafana squad
Not a single Kaizer Chiefs player is included in the final Bafana Bafana 23-man squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
South Africa are set to host Liberia on 24 March before travelling to Monrovia for the return fixture against the West Africans four days later.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos included Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen in his 35-member provisional squad last week which he has now trimmed to 23 players. Petersen has since been dropped, leaving Amakhosi with no representative in the national side.
The Belgian preferred AmaZulu stopper Veli Mothwa and Ricardo Goss who joins team captain Ronwen Williams in the goalkeeping department.
The snubbing of Amakhosi players could be a reflection of how standards at the Soweto giants have declined in a season where they are struggling for consistency.
Chiefs players started falling out of favour with Broos last year when he omitted Keagan Dolly and Yusuf Maart who used to be his favourites, citing Amakhosi’s poor form.
The Belgian also called up Ashley du Preez and Kgaogelo Sekgota last September but the duo is now out of the national fold.
While Chiefs have no player in the Bafana squad, Mamelodi Sundowns dominate the selection after providing eight players.
Surprisingly, right-back Khuliso Mudau who was in the preliminary squad has been dropped as Broos settled for Sekhukhune United’s Nyiko Mobbie.
Other notable players left out from the initial squad include Orlando Pirates midfielder Miguel Timm, Cape Town City’s Khanyisa Mayo who grabbed a brace on Tuesday, Pyramids FC’s Fagrie Lakay and Portugal-based attacker Kobamelo Kodisang.
