Chiefs out to prove Richards Bay win was no fluke
- Kaizer Chiefs aim to rebuild their title hopes, hosting Royal AM on Saturday after ending their winless streak with a 2-1 victory against Richards Bay.
- Coach Nabi may include Gaston Sirino and Mfundo Vilakazi, while defenders Miguel and Frosler remain sidelined due to suspensions.
Kaizer Chiefs have, in their recent games, been struggling to sell themselves as serious Premier Soccer League title contenders and that has set them on a mission to silence their critics.
The Soweto giants have 11 points fewer than log leaders Orlando Pirates, having played one game less.
After ending a three-game winless streak in the league with a 2-1 victory over struggling Richards Bay on Wednesday, Amakhosi return for PSL business on Saturday.
They are back at Peter Mokaba Stadium where they host Royal AM who have lost their last two PSL games and pose a test to see if Chiefs are on a genuine recovery path.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi did not use attacker Gaston Sirino against the Natal Rich Boyz and could unleash him on Saturday.
“We were planning to give him some minutes during the game [against Richards Bay],” Nabi told the media.
“But given the circumstances with the red card [to Reeve Frosler], we couldn’t risk it. But we will probably see him in the next games.”
The Tunisian tinkered with his team on Wednesday, handing maiden season starts to Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Pule Mmodi and Ashley du Preez, who repaid him with Chiefs’ second goal.
“I’m very happy with the players that started, especially Ashley,” added Nabi.
“This is going to boost his confidence going forward. Ox [Mthethwa] gave an unbelievable performance. Mmodi did his job very well, but we believe they can do better.”
Just like Sirino, Mfundo Vilakazi was also an unused substitute against Richards Bay and could be used on Saturday, while goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari is expected back from injury.
Defenders Inacio Miguel and Reeve Frosler are unavailable for selection due to suspension.
