Kaizer Chiefs are calling on higher powers to break their long trophy drought.
The club’s bosses turned to the Shembe Church at eBuhleni in Inanda, north of Durban, for prayers ahead of their tough Nedbank Cup semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Amakhosi have not won a trophy in the last 10 years. Their fans are desperate for silverware — and so are the club’s leaders.
Kaizer Motaung Junior, the team’s Sporting Director, led the visit to the holy hill on Saturday. There, Shembe leader Inkosi Mduduzi Nyazilwezulu Shembe offered prayers and wished the team well for their clash at Loftus Stadium on Sunday at 6pm.
The game is set to be a tough one. Chiefs will face the log leaders at a packed stadium in Tshwane.
The team has been struggling all season and currently sits in 9th place in the DStv Premiership.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi is under pressure to deliver a result. Many fans have lost faith in him, but winning the Nedbank Cup could turn things around for both him and the club.
In the other semi-final, defending champions Orlando Pirates will face Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium.
Pirates beat Sundowns in last year’s final to claim the trophy, and are looking to do it again.
