Cold front brings dangerous weather to Cape Town

  • A yellow level 4 warning has been issued for strong winds and big waves from Friday to Saturday.
  • The storm could bring runaway fires, uprooted trees and damaged roofs across parts of the Western Cape.

Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management team says residents should get ready for strong winds and rough seas this weekend.

Sonica Lategan from the City of Cape Town said the South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 4 warning for the storm, which is expected to hit between Friday evening and Saturday evening.

The colour-coded system used by the Weather Service shows the risk level of bad weather — yellow means moderate risk and asks people to be cautious. A level 4 warning means there’s a low chance of serious damage, but people should still watch out.

Lategan said strong north-westerly to westerly winds will slam into the Western Cape coastline, but things should start calming down by Saturday afternoon.

The winds could knock down trees, blow roofs and garage doors off, fuel runaway fires and cause chaos near the coast.

“Secure your outdoor furniture and watch out for anything that could fly away,” Lategan warned. “Be extra careful when driving, especially if there are fallen trees or debris on the road.”

Anyone who finds themselves in danger or needs help during the storm can call the City’s Public Emergency Centre at 021 480 7700.
