Crime bites: Hunt for killers who shot two cops dead

Namahadi – Free State police are hunting for killers who shot two police officers dead on Saturday night, 4 January. The officers were answering a call about a house robbery in Mangaung Village. When they arrived, two robbers ran away and the police chased them. During the chase, one robber ambushed a police car and shot the driver in the neck, killing him. When other officers went to check the house, another robber came out shooting. He killed one officer and took the dead officer’s gun.

Barberton – Police arrested two men, aged 33 and 39, on Sunday, 5 January, for having explosives. Officers stopped them on the R83 near Consort Mine during Operation Vala Umgodi. Police found jackhammers and R10,000 in cash. One of the men was already out on bail for having an illegal gun when he was caught. He must appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on 30 January.

Bultfontein – Bultfontein police are looking into the murder of an 86-year-old woman found dead in her home. On Saturday, 4 January, they found her body in an outside toilet lying in blood. She had been stabbed many times in her back and neck. She was already dead when police arrived. Police don’t know why she was killed.

Meadowdale – Robbers killed a six-year-old boy during a robbery at McDonald’s on Friday, 3 January. The criminals first ordered food at the drive-through but then cancelled. One robber climbed through the window and threatened staff for money. A second robber followed and fired a shot inside. They took the cash box and ran. The getaway driver then stopped a family in the car behind him. He robbed them and fired a shot that killed their six-year-old child. Police haven’t caught anyone yet.

Giyani – Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for raping a 40-year-old woman in Skhimini village. On Wednesday, 1 January, he approached her while she was walking home. When she said no to his advances, he beat and raped her. Mopani police caught him, and he appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on 6 January.
