Crime bites: Man in psychiatric ward charged with murder

Sekhukhune – In the early hours of Saturday morning, hospital staff discovered a 45-year-old patient on top of a fellow patient, who had died from a gunshot wound to the head and other injuries. According to police, the suspect was found covered in blood. He is also said to have bitten the victim during the attack. A security guard at the hospital intervened and shot the suspect in both legs. The man is now under police guard while receiving treatment at a local hospital. He has been formally charged with murder. Police are still trying to determine how a firearm ended up in the hospital’s psychiatric ward.
Tembisa – A 37-year-old man accused of killing his partner in Ivory Park, Tembisa, has been arrested in Bode village near Giyani, Limpopo. The suspect had been on the run since the incident last month. He is due to appear in court soon in Gauteng, where he will face a charge of murder.
Musina – A 48-year-old foreign national has been arrested at the Beitbridge border post for allegedly trying to smuggle explosives worth about R618,200. Police stopped a white MAN truck during a routine inspection and found 11 red sacks filled with items resembling polony. On closer inspection, they found 2,118 cartridges and 16 reels of detonator cable packed in a gel-like substance. The man is expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon.
Mabopane – Police have launched a manhunt after an off-duty police sergeant was shot and killed in Mabopane, north of Pretoria, on Monday, 11 March. Sergeant Marcus Lekalakala of the Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit was driving his red Polo when he came under fire from a group travelling in a sedan. He was declared dead at the scene. The motive for the attack is still unknown, and police are continuing their investigation.
