North West police have launched a massive manhunt for three escaped dangerous prisoners, including a man facing four rape charges.
The three fugitives broke out of Swartruggens police cells in North West on Sunday.
The men escaped by breaking through the roof of their cell. A fourth escapee, aged 23, was caught while trying to hitchhike on the N4 road near Swartruggens Plaza.
North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the captured prisoner will face charges of escaping from custody when he appears in the Swartruggens Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
The three men still on the run are:
- Mpho Vincent Madito, 29, who was being held for four rape cases in Swartruggens and Makgobistad.
- Thapelo Mogwele Molebatsi, 25, who was in custody for theft.
- Johannes Mfaladi, 28, who was arrested for assault with intent to cause serious harm.
“Investigation into the matter, including circumstances that led to the escape, continues,” said Myburgh.
Police are working to track down the remaining escapees. Anyone with information can contact investigating officer Captain Peterson Monageng on 082 569 5868 or their nearest police station.
