Eight-year-old kills his five-year-old friend

An eight-year-old boy from Chesterville in Durban has shocked the community after he allegedly accidentally drowned his friend while they were swimming.

The incident took place on Tuesday last week.

Ncamsile Mabizela, who is the mother of Liyeto Mabizela, five, said that she is still trying to come to terms with the death of her child.

“The family of that child who killed my son has never come to us. We are hurt and I don’t know what to do.

“My son came home after school and he was so happy. He then went out with his friend. At around 7 pm on Tuesday, the kids who went out with him said that he had been killed in the river,” she said. Ncamsile said she was told he had been held underwater until he drowned.

Liyeto was a learner at Ngwenya Primary School in Chesterville.

Neighbours in Chesterville, who didn’t want to be named, said they hoped both families could resolve the matter to avoid trauma to the other child, who is accused of accidentally killing Liyeto.

“We are shocked about this incident because we don’t know what kind of justice we might say we are looking for. Just imagine an eight-year-old child is now a killer. Maybe the only solution is to take this child to social workers to get counselling,” one neighbour said.

Liyeto was laid to rest on Tuesday and his mother made it clear that she does not want pictures of her son to be published as she is still traumatised.
