Ex-Bafana star Morula shot dead
Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Morula has died after being shot outside his family home in Mmakau, North West, on Wednesday evening.
The ex-Jomo Cosmos star was 57 and succumbed to his wounds after being shot five times.
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder David Makgale who was in the North West Masters Association together with Morula confirmed his death.
“He was shot dead at around 7.30pm in Mmakau last night. He was shot five times and the bullets went through his bakkie,” Makgale told KickOff.
“He was closing the gate on his way to buy electricity when the suspect shot him. He had moved to Mmakau to stay with his mother.
“We have lost a true legend – he was the first player from Brits to play in the World Cup in 1998.
“He remained active with Masters here in the North West. We want to make sure we give him a dignified funeral.”
Morula was part of the Bafana Bafana squad which went to the 1998 Fifa World Cup although his national team career was shortlived.
His club career saw him playing in Colombia for Once Calas and he also turned out for Aurich-Canana in Peru.
In Europe, he played in Turkey for Vanspor and had three stints with Cosmos.
However, after retiring, Morula had brushes with the law and in 2014 and 2015 he was arrested for robbery and car theft but the cases were withdrawn.
