Gift of the Givers backs SA’s case against Israel
Pro-Palestine protesters gathered outside the Cape Town High Court on Monday to support South Africa’s ongoing case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and show solidarity with the country’s legal team.
South Africa was due to file what is called a “memorial” – its substantive charge of genocide against Israel – to the ICJ by 28 October. The memorial will reportedly contain more evidence, in “forensic detail”, to show that “this is not just a plausible case of genocide, but indeed it is genocide”.
The protesters, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), faced cold weather as they called for an end to violence and urged South Africa to go beyond its ICJ case against Israel.
Gift of the Givers CEO Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said: “We call on South Africa to support humanity, justice, and truth – not that truth needs any support, because truth is self-propagating.”
The organisation is the largest disaster response non-governmental organisation of African origin on the continent.
Martin Jansen, an executive member of the PSC, said: “We are here today to support the case of the government against Israel – a case of genocide. Unfortunately, that case will take two years.
“But as we know, Israel has defied the ICJ interim ruling already in January, and what this means is that hundreds of Palestinians have lost their lives since that time. We know that daily massacres are taking place as well.”
He called for immediate action from South Africa and other governments.
Gift of the Givers thanked the University of the Witwatersrand for accepting 22 Palestinian medical students from Gaza.
The University of Cape Town has accepted 27 students, while the University of Pretoria is set to take in 10 students in 2025.
