‘God is great’ says Deon Cole after health scare in South Africa
- The American actor pulled out of the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival after falling seriously ill in Johannesburg.
- He thanked South African doctors and nurses at Christiaan Barnard Hospital for helping him recover.
Deon Cole fell seriously ill in South Africa and was forced to cancel his headline show at a major comedy festival.
Cole, best known for his role in the hit series Black-ish, had been booked to headline the massive Laugh Africa Comedy Festival in Sandton, Johannesburg.
But last Wednesday, organisers suddenly announced that Cole had pulled out, giving few details about what had happened. He was later replaced by fellow American comedian Faizon Love.
Cole has now confirmed that he suffered a medical emergency. He posted photos of himself in a hospital bed, hooked up to wires and machines, and gave fans an update.
“Finally on the road to recovery,” he wrote. “God is a great God, I praise Him and thank Him for His love, grace and mercy. I want to thank all the doctors, nurses (sisters) and staff here in South Africa at Christiaan Barnard Hospital and my doctor in the States. Thank you.”
Cole also thanked BET and the cast and crew of his show, Average Joe, for delaying filming so he could focus on getting better.
He apologised to fans and festivalgoers, saying: “Sorry to the African Laugh Festival I was scheduled to headline, thanks for your understanding and support (I’ll make it next year).”
