Greenwood greeted by ‘die’ chants

By Razeen Gutta

Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood made an impressive 20-minute cameo for Getafe against Osasuna despite a hostile reception from the away fans.

The 21-year-old was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 before being charged with attempted rape, controlling, coercive behaviour and assault after allegations were made against him online.

In February this year, all charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Despite that, United did not allow him to return to the squad.

A deadline-day move to Spain was followed by a warm welcome from Getafe fans, and on Sunday it was finally time for Greenwood to start afresh.

The Englishman came on in the 77th minute with the scores level at 2-2, and despite the home fans’ positive ovation, Osasuna fans were heard chanting “Greenwood, die”.

La Liga will be opening up an investigation after the chants, with The Athletic reporting that a disciplinary process with Osasuna will follow.

As a former ambassador for the brand, the player donned Nike boots on his return, something that was not taken well by the sporting goods company.

“Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete,” the brand said in a statement.

Despite the hostility from those inside and outside the ground, Greenwood delivered an impressive debut — showing no signs of any rust as he won a corner from which Getafe got the winning goal.

His efforts were quickly recognised by his new manager, Jose Bordalas, who said post-match that he was “pleasantly surprised” at Greenwood’s performance.

“Mason is a great player, we have a lot of trust in him and I think it will be very positive for Getafe and for Spanish football,” Bordalas told the media.
