Hunt on for security guard who shot colleague in church

A security officer in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, turned his service pistol on a colleague following a heated argument at a church in Radium where they were stationed on Human Rights Day.

The two men were on duty at the time of the altercation, which quickly escalated, leading to one officer shooting the other.

The 37-year-old victim was shot several times and was rushed to a nearby medical facility where he was reported to be in a critical condition.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting and left his service pistol in the guard-room.

Police have opened a case of attempted murder and have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

“We are appealing to members of the public who have any information about the suspect’s whereabouts or that could lead to the suspect’s arrest to come forward. Information can be provided anonymously and will be treated in the strictest confidence,” Ledwaba said.

Limpopo SAPS provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe condemned the shooting.

“We are sure the investigating team will trace and arrest the perpetrator to face the full might of the law,” she said.
