Ingonyama Trust denies claims of illegally sold land

  • King Misuzulu’s investigator claims millions are missing from a land sale by Ingonyama Trust.
  • The Trust CEO says all money is accounted for as tensions rise with the Zulu royal family.

The CEO of the Ingonyama Trust has denied claims that millions of rands are missing after land belonging to the Zulu nation was sold illegally.

The fight started after King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s investigator said R23-million from a suspicious land sale couldn’t be found.

Trust CEO advocate Vela Mngwengwe has denied such a land sale, hitting back at investigator Stephen Rakwena from Van Rensburg Rakwena Attorneys, who claimed the land was sold for three times its real value.

“Mr Rakwena has alleged there’s an amount of R23-million related to the sale of land which is unaccounted for. This is absolute nonsense as the money was invested as soon as it was received. The actual amount however was R22,168,190 including VAT,” said Mngwengwe in a statement.

He said Rakwena couldn’t know the true story because he hadn’t seen all the records yet.

“Mr Rakwena has no access to the financial records of the Ingonyama Trust since this transaction is yet to be audited. Hence he could not possibly discover this through his desktop preliminary report.”

Rakwena visited the Trust offices on Friday to collect documents. He told Scrolla.Africa he would return this week because he still needs more information.

The Trust is in chaos, with King Misuzulu himself asking Land Reform Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso to dissolve the board.

The King complained that board members didn’t respect him. At one meeting, the deputy chair reportedly told him he is “just a king”.

Nyhontso said no one has spoken to the King since the board was suspended because he is in seclusion until 15 January.

He added that legally the board is still active because King Misuzulu went beyond his powers in trying to dissolve it.

The minister plans to meet the King to discuss what happens next.
