The first leg of the first Carabao Cup semi-final went Newcastle United’s way, with Arsenal wasteful in front of goal at the Emirates on Tuesday.

Just three of the Gunners’ 23 attempts were on target, while the Magpies ensured that just seven efforts were enough to find the back of the net twice in their 2-0 win.

Alexander Isak, a striker linked with Arsenal, netted late on in the first half to cap his 50th goal in all competitions for Newcastle.

Since Isak’s his debut in August 2022, only Erling Haaland (105) and Mohamed Salah (73) have scored more goals in all competitions among players from England’s top-flight.

Five minutes after half-time, Anthony Gordon doubled the advantage, giving Mikel Arteta’s side all to do if they are to win their first ever trophy under the Spaniard in March.

Only once in the history of the League Cup have a side in the semi-finals progressed to the final having lost the first leg by two or more goals, with Aston Villa holding that place after defeating Tranmere Rovers in the last four over 20 years ago.

The second semi-final pits Spurs up against Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday before both second legs take place on the 5th and 6th of February.
