JAC Motors ends all ties with Ngizwe Mchunu after anti gay comments

  • JAC Motors says Ngizwe Mchunu stopped working with them in 2023 and that his anti-gay comments go against their values of respect and fairness.
  • The SA Human Rights Commission is investigating his comments after people complained that they promote hate and discrimination.

JAC Motors South Africa says it has no link to media personality Ngizwe Mchunu after he made comments against gay people.

The company said in a statement that Mchunu’s time as a brand ambassador ended two years ago.

“We wish to clarify that the ambassadorship agreement with Mr Ngizwe Mchunu ended in 2023. After that, he bought his car on his own,” the company said.

JAC Motors also said it does not agree with what he said. “JAC Motors South Africa and JAC Halfway reject and distance ourselves from any hateful or discriminatory statements made by Mr Mchunu,” the statement read.

“These views do not reflect our values. We support respect, equality and inclusion for everyone.”

Mchunu made headlines after a video went around showing him blaming gay men for South Africa’s problems. He also mentioned media personality Somizi Mhlongo, saying he should leave the country.

Several people and human rights activists called on JAC Motors to cut all ties with Mchunu.

Human rights activist Mxolisi Makhubu said it was worrying that someone promoting hate was linked to a well-known brand.

Over the weekend, Mchunu was removed from the Kwa Mai-Mai market in Johannesburg after a fight broke out. Police had to step in to calm the situation.

The South African Human Rights Commission has confirmed it is looking into complaints about Mchunu’s comments to see if they break hate speech laws.
