KZN boss quits after years of tensions with premier’s office

  • Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize resigned as KZN Director General after years of reported tensions with the premier’s office and political challenges.
  • She was praised for improving service delivery and unity in government, despite controversies, and will be replaced by Dr Nkosenye Zulu.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Director General, Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize, has officially stepped down from her powerful position after years of clashes with the premier’s office.

The announcement came on Tuesday when Premier Thami Ntuli said in a statement that Mkhize had handed in her resignation. He called it a moment of “mixed emotions”.

“I have accepted Dr Mkhize’s resignation, but also with deep appreciation for her exemplary and dedicated service to the province of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Ntuli.

Mkhize took over the role on 1 August 2017. Since then, she has led the provincial government through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the deadly July 2021 unrest.

Ntuli praised her leadership for helping to improve how departments worked together, strengthening service delivery, and guiding key projects like Operation Sukuma Sakhe, which brings government services to local communities.

Mkhize made history as the first woman to hold the Director General role in the province. She is also remembered for her efforts to bring together the political and administrative sides of government.

However, her time in office was not without drama. Rumours swirled for years that she had tried to resign under former Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube’s leadership, but was blocked from doing so.

She also faced backlash after she was accused of blocking funding for King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s trip to Malawi with his regiments. Mkhize later defended her decision, saying the issue was about logistics.

Ntuli confirmed that Mkhize would be replaced by Deputy Director General Dr Nkosenye Zulu, who takes over as acting Director General with immediate effect.

“Dr Zulu is a highly experienced and capable public servant, and I am confident that he will provide steady leadership and ensure continuity,” said Ntuli.

Mkhize’s predecessor, Nhlanhla Ngidi, joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party last year.

Mkhize is widely praised for leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, unity and transformation in government.
