KZN news bites: ANC Youth League wants party to dump coalition partners

Durban: The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal says the African National Congress at the KZN Legislature must look for another coalition partner to govern the province or take the position of being an opposition party. The Youth League leaders made the demands on Wednesday during a media briefing held at ANC Provincial headquarters which is Pixley kaIsaka Seme House. The League says the ANC is in an abusive relationship in the Government of Provincial Unity and they accused particular IFP Minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi of the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs together with Democratic Alliance Finance Minister Francois Rodgers of bullying the ANC and weaponising their departments to humiliate the ANC-led municipalities and provincial government departments. The anger comes after the IFP overthrew uMkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka of the ANC and replaced him with the IFP regional leader Comfort Khumalo.
Quarry Heights: Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a suspect who was hiding in Ntabankulu in the Eastern Cape after he shot and killed a taxi driver in Quarry Heights, north of Durban. On 22 March 2025, Phumlani Mkhwanazi, 40, was at a taxi rank on Khabazela Road, Quarry Heights. It is alleged that an argument happened between taxi drivers over who should load passengers first. During the heated argument the suspect shot and killed Mkhwanazi. A case of murder was opened and investigations by the Taxi Violence Unit followed. An operation was conducted at the suspect’s home and a firearm was recovered. Tracing operations continued and a 28-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday in Eastern Cape at Ntabankulu.
Pietermaritzburg: The inquest into the death of Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli will return to the Pietermaritzburg High Court on 13 October 2025 for the state’s closing arguments. On 14 April 2025, the National Prosecuting Authority through the Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal Adv. Elaine Harrison reopened the inquest. During the inquest proceedings, the NPA led an array of witnesses, including South African Police members, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation officials, scene reconstruction and simulation experts, forensic analysts, medical experts, family members of Chief Luthuli, anti-apartheid activists and friends of Chief Luthuli. The matter has been scheduled for the period of 13 to 16 October 2025.
