KZN news bites: Four killed at traditional ceremony in Estcourt

Estcourt – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested one suspect and are searching for at least five others in connection with the killing of four people and the attempted murder of one person in the Nyezane area in Estcourt. Police say six suspects, wearing face masks and brandishing handguns and rifles, gatecrashed a traditional ceremony on Sunday and opened fire at the people who were enjoying the festivities. Three people died at the scene, and two others were rushed to hospital, where one later died.

Durban – KZN police have found a fully equipped secret office on Mathews Meyiwa Road in Greyville where South African women were being married to illegal foreigners. This was to grant citizenship to undocumented foreign nationals. Three suspects have been arrested.

Umhlathuze – The Democracy Bus is in the King Cetshwayo district this week, making it possible for ordinary people to hop on and witness a presentation on 30 years of democracy. On Monday, the bus was at uMhlathuze local municipality, where students from Allconnections Training Centre took it to the Nsezi Water Treatment Plant for their practical experience in water treatment and sanitation. The programme is part of the Water Treatment and Sanitation Expo build-up, which will be held in Port Dunford Thusong Service Centre on 30 October.

Durban—The city’s multibillion-rand Bridge City Housing Development has ground to a halt, apparently because of a funding delay. DA eThekwini spokesperson on housing, councillor Zamani Khuzwayo, said the project was approved in 2019 and set for completion in December 2022. The project was designed to integrate the communities of Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma, and KwaMashu into Durban’s urban ecosystem.

eThekwini—The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s College of Agriculture and Engineering Science is hosting an online workshop from 5 to 7 November designed to educate enthusiasts on how to harness AI’s potential for research purposes.

Ulundi – The SA Weather Service has issued a level two warning for severe thunderstorms in the northeastern region of KZN covering Ulundi, Nongoma and Richards Bay. It warned communities and authorities to be prepared for strong winds, heavy downpours and lightning.

Pietermaritzburg – The Msunduzi municipality will auction at least 79 vehicles, 99 computers, and 155 pieces of equipment. The municipality expects just R820,000 from the vehicles, which were originally purchased at a cost of R10.8-million to the taxpayer.
