KZN news bites: Mayor warns of sexual abuse of people with disabilities

Celani Sikhakhane brings you KwaZulu-Natal’s latest news

uMlalazi: The Mayor of uMlalazi local municipality in Eshowe, north of KwaZulu-Natal, has warned against the sexual abuse of those who live with disability and against their discrimination in communities. Mayor Queen Xulu was speaking recently during the Icora FM interview where she raised concerns about men who are sexually taking advantage of disabled people. She said the most shocking matter is that some disabled people are getting pregnant or have more than three children. “This is the crisis we are fighting in this municipality because most men take sexual advantage of people living with disabilities. We also have issues with families who discriminate against these people and lock them inside their homes. They only take them out to fetch their disability money. I call on communities to stop this disgrace because these are human beings like any of us. I have even resorted to making sure that when I have a public event, they must also take part in that gathering and share their views that can assist us in service delivery,” said Mayor Xulu.

Redcliff: An under-construction four-storey building collapsed in Durban and trapped workers in the debris of the structure in Redcliffe, north of Durban. Preliminary reports indicate that it trapped several workers who were on site at the time of the incident. The situation remains active and highly sensitive, with emergency medical personnel attending to the injured while specialised search and rescue teams work tirelessly to reach those who are still trapped beneath the debris.

Durban: Three suspects who are linked with business and house robberies in and around the eThekwini District were arrested by Durban Central police officers in the Durban CBD on Thursday. Police were conducting a crime prevention operation along Dr Pixley KaSeme Street when they received intelligence about a vehicle whose occupants were allegedly robbing people of their belongings. The vehicle matching the description was intercepted and during the search, the three occupants of the vehicle were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, laptops and cellphones suspected to be stolen. Preliminary investigations linked the suspects to the robbery of laptops and cellphones at a school in KwaMashu, the robbery of a teacher at a school in Ntuzuma as well as a house robbery in KwaMakhutha.
