KZN news bites: Moz-SA border wall 75% complete after years of delay
Celani Sikhakhane brings you the latest Kwa-Zulu Natal news.
Manguzi – The controversial concrete Jersey barriers that cost taxpayers millions to fight border crime are 75% complete. On Wednesday, members of the KZN Legislature inspected Phase 1 of the project in Manguzi. Installing the concrete barriers along the fence separating South Africa and Mozambique in the far north of KwaZulu-Natal was hailed as the solution to end vehicle smuggling in the area. But the R85.7-million tender awarded for constructing an 8km border wall has been controversial. It was awarded to ISF Construction and Shula Construction.
KwaDukuza – The DA in KwaDukuza has called on all political parties to exercise restraint and discipline in council tomorrow, 31 October, when motions of no confidence will be tabled. The DA submitted the motion against the speaker, Councillor Govidammal “Dolly” Govender, and the ANC a second motion against its mayor, Lindile Nhaca. The DA is concerned that the ANC’s motion to unseat their defiant mayor will create chaos and protest action. The DA said that “the ANC in KwaDukuza is notorious for political thuggery and infighting, and the end result of this division and plundering is the lack of services to the people of KwaDukuza. We are calling on all political parties ... to ensure that the business of council gets underway smoothly.”
Jozini – KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli took part in a roadblock on the N2 near the Jozini off-ramp and praised all the law enforcement officers for sterling work despite the heavy odds stacked against them. He encouraged them to continue inspiring hope among KwaZulu-Natal citizens, who appreciate their excellent work. Ntuli conducted the roadblock ahead of Operation Sukuma Sakhe, taking place in Umkhanyakude district municipality.
