KZN news bites: University students accuse rivals of using muthi to win election

Durban: The upcoming elections of the Student Representative Council at the University of KwaZulu-Natal are dominated by witchcraft allegations this time. This follows after the EFF student command complained that members of the opposition student movements are performing witchcraft at 2am every day using muthi and steaming themselves in boiling water while calling out the names of the EFF Students Command candidates. “We are deeply disturbed by shocking evidence that has come to light regarding members of the opposition who have resorted to supernatural powers and witchcraft in an attempt to sabotage our candidates and our movement ahead of the SRC elections,” said EFF student command in a letter that was sent to the highest body of the movement at UKZN. They claim that the witchcraft is being performed at Beachwood where individuals are being seen carrying two-litre bottles filled with water-like substances.

uMgungundlovu: Police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested four suspects aged between 25 and 35 within uMgungundlovu District for house robbery and kidnapping. It is alleged that on Thursday, five intruders entered a home at KwaSwayimane and pointed a gun at a male occupant demanding money. The suspects took two vehicles which were parked in the yard and put the victim in the back of one of the vehicles and drove away with him. Along the way the suspects called the victim’s wife demanding that she deposits R150,000 to secure her husband’s release. The requested money was deposited and the victim was later dropped off at Elandskop. The matter was reported at Wartburg Police Station for investigation. An operation by Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit and the Provincial Tracking Team on Monday led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of one of the vehicles taken during the house robbery. The vehicle was found at Imbali Unit J. Police also recovered a firearm and ammunition, two magazines, eight cellphones and a television set. The arrested suspects will appear at the Wartburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Pietermaritzburg: Former uMzimkhulu Municipality Manager Zweliphansi Stanley Skhosana made his first appearance on Monday in the Pietermaritzburg High Court, alongside Sbonelo Myeza and Mbulelo Mpofana in connection with the murder of former ANC Youth League Secretary General Sindiso Jethro Magaqa. Magaqa was killed in July 2017 in uMzimkhulu. They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, malicious injury to property, and defeating the administration of justice.
