Madanon accused of giving stolen lyrics to Babes Wodumo
- Sibisi claims he gave Madanon three sets of lyrics, which were used without his name or payment.
- He wants public credit and royalties after lyrics appeared in songs by Babes Wodumo, Que and DJ Bhunu.
Sinethemba “Mreyza” Sibisi says his close friend and gqom artist Ndumiso “Madanon” Ndimande betrayed him by stealing his lyrics and giving them to other musicians without credit.
Sibisi said Madanon asked him for verses, and he handed over three sets.
But he was shocked to hear those same lyrics in songs by other artists later, with no mention of his name.
“He asked for verses, and I gave them to him,” Sibisi said, Sunday World reported.
“He then used them in Babes Wodumo’s ‘Thobeka’, Que’s ‘People Are Burning’, and DJ Bhunu’s ‘Abangan Bam’ without mentioning my name.”
Sibisi said he has no problem with the verses being used — as long as he gets proper credit and payment.
“This is my creativity. He performs these songs at gigs and gets paid, while I get nothing,” he said. “I just want him to admit the work is mine so I can get royalties.”
He believes the artists involved were unaware the lyrics weren’t credited properly and would have added his name if they knew.
Sibisi said there was no written agreement, but they had a verbal understanding that he would be acknowledged.
“I’ve tried calling and texting him, but he’s ignoring me. He knows I’m angry. I just want him to do the right thing,” he said.
The two met in 2013 and started working together when they were still underground.
Sibisi said Madanon appreciated his work and invited him to join the crew.
“He liked my work and brought me in, but I didn’t know he would take advantage of me,” he said.
Attempts to reach Babes Wodumo, Que and DJ Bhunu were unsuccessful.
When contacted by Sunday World, Madanon confirmed he knew Sibisi and had worked with him, but said: “I cannot comment right now because I’m busy on a shoot,” before hanging up.
