Man with no degree tries to play doctor and gets busted

  • The man was recognised by a nurse who had seen him posing as a teacher online before.
  • He did not treat any patients and will now be sent for psychiatric help at the hospital.

A man pretending to be a doctor was caught at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital after a nurse recognised him from social media.

The man was arrested on Thursday while walking around the Ear, Nose and Throat ward in Mthatha, wearing a white coat and two stethoscopes.

Eastern Cape Health spokesperson Siyanda Manana said, “He was dressed in a white coat and had two stethoscopes around his neck.”

“He had also been at the surgical ward on Level 5 before being apprehended and detained on Level 4. Police were called and they took him away,” Manana said.

The nurse who spotted him remembered him from social media, where he had previously posed as a teacher.

The department confirmed that the man had not examined any patients during his time in the hospital.

The hospital will now work with the police to ensure the man is admitted to the psychiatric unit.
