Marx warns Boks not to relax after title win

  • The Springboks beat Argentina 29-27 at Twickenham to clinch the Rugby Championship title on points difference ahead of the All Blacks.
  • Marx scored two tries and said the team must fix mistakes before facing France and Ireland on their end-of-year tour.

Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx says winning the Rugby Championship still feels “surreal” but admits the team must raise their game before a brutal November tour.

The Boks snatched the title on points difference after a nail-biting 29-27 win over Argentina at Twickenham on Saturday.

But despite lifting the trophy, it’s been a shaky season. The Boks failed to impress in matches against the Barbarians, Georgia and Italy, and suffered losses to the Wallabies at Ellis Park and the All Blacks at Eden Park.

Even in their final game, the team almost let it slip. After leading 29-13, they allowed Los Pumas to fight back and nearly steal the match.

Marx, who scored two second-half tries and dominated in the scrums, said the win was special but admitted there’s plenty to fix.

“It still feels surreal,” he said. “I’m extremely grateful for everything that has happened, but a lot of hard work still lies ahead to improve ourselves.”

He praised Argentina’s fightback, saying the Boks had expected a tough challenge. “They are a proud nation and a great rugby side,” he said. “To beat them twice in a row is very special.”

The players will now return to their franchises before reuniting for a five-game end-of-year tour that includes clashes against France and Ireland – two of the toughest teams in world rugby.
