A taxi driver from Manenberg in Cape Town decided to entertain his passengers — and attract even more customers — by placing a dildo on the front of his taxi.

He also hung it from the interior roof of the vehicle to make his passengers laugh.

“I plugged it outside to entertain other motorists and attract more passengers. As they got curious about why I put a dildo, they became eager to see what’s inside the taxi,” said the driver, who wished to remain anonymous.

The driver said 90% of his passengers laughed and took pictures and videos of the dildo, but that the other 10% found it disrespectful.

“We enjoy the laughs and reactions — we want to film everyone’s reaction when they see it,” he said.

A fellow taxi driver said: “Why they even think of putting a dildo there shows how naughty they are. They are crazy, but I like what they did because it will make people laugh and forget about the troubles they are facing.”

Lizo Helebe, a 45-year-old passenger, said people are going through a lot and need something to cheer them up.

“I laughed when I saw the video [on social media]. I could never imagine that someone could put the whole dildo in a taxi.”

A motorist said when he first saw the taxi, some motorists were taking pictures of it.

“Instead of driving and moving forward, motorists were stopping and taking pictures while laughing. It is good, but those taking videos and pictures need to be careful on the road. We don’t want them to cause accidents while they are busy with the dildo,” he said.

Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for the city’s traffic services, said if the dildo was within 250 mm of the licence plate, it would be deemed illegal.

“Should this be the case... [we would be] unable to act based on social media videos, as legislation also requires that an officer witnesses a transgression firsthand to issue a fine,” said Bezuidenhout.
