  • In a separate bust, police arrested seven people with R54,000 worth of illegal abalone in Bellville.

Thieves pulled off a daring robbery at a business near Cape Town International Airport, making off with precious metals early on Saturday morning.

The gang of four wore masks and gloves as they cut through a fence to get into the cargo area, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said.

“The suspects wore balaclavas and had their hands covered with gloves. They fled the scene in an unknown direction,” said Swartbooi.

The robbers broke into a vault and escaped with bags of precious metals.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, police caught seven suspects with illegal abalone worth R54,000 in Bellville.

Officers got a tip-off about abalone being delivered to an address near Old Oak and Frans Conradie Drive.

When they searched the place, they found 72 kg of abalone.

“They detained seven suspects between the ages of 36 and 60 on a charge of unlawful possession of abalone. One of the suspects, who was also found in possession of a blank pistol, will also make a court appearance on a charge of possession of an imitation firearm,” said Swartbooi.

The suspects will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court soon.
