Mzansi youngsters strike gold in Peru

South Africa’s Udeme Okon delivered a strong performance at the U20 World Championships in Peru, winning the gold medal in the men’s 400m final on Friday morning.

The 18-year-old finished with an impressive time of 45.69 seconds, beating American runners Jayden Davis, who took silver, and Sidi Njie, who took bronze.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Olympic star Bayanda Walaza continued his success by easily advancing to the men’s 200m final.

Walaza, who recently won gold in the 100m with a time of 10.19 seconds earlier in the week, secured his place in the final by winning his 200m semi-final heat in 21.00 seconds.

The final is set for 1:47 am on Saturday.

Walaza, 18, has already achieved great success this season, having won gold in the 100m and helping Team SA secure a silver medal in the 4x100m relay at the Paris Olympic Games earlier this month.

His teammate Bradley Nkoana, who earned bronze in the 100m with a time of 10.26 seconds, also played a role in the relay team’s Olympic success.

In other news from the championships, South African runner Chane Vermeulen just missed out on a spot in the women’s 200m final.

She finished third in her semi-final heat, but her time of 23.78 seconds wasn’t enough to advance.
