Pastor stripped and abused by stepson

A humiliated pastor cried at the Protea Magistrate’s Court in Soweto, describing how his stepson had undressed him and touched his private parts.

With tears in his eyes and a shaking voice, John Nkosi, 89 – a retired teacher and pastor – told the court that he avoids being around his stepson Velile Hlabi, 61, because of his abusive nature.

He said that after doing his daily chores he would take his plastic chair and go sit under a peach tree just so he wouldn’t come in contact with his stepson, who lives with him and his wife.

Detailing the horrific day, Nkosi said that he was in the kitchen making breakfast for his wife, who is battling a bipolar condition.

“I was by the kitchen sink when he walked in. He said I must pack up my belongings and leave because he didn’t want me living at that house. I refused and continued to make food for my wife.

“He grabbed me by my arm and pushed me into a corner. Trying to fight him off, he pulled my pants and underpants down and pulled my private parts. He said that this is a warning and next time he will chop it off,” said Nkosi.

Fearing for his safety, the man of the cloth laid charges against Hlabi at the Naledi police station in Soweto, and Hlabi was arrested later that evening.

“When I woke up the following day, I continued with my routine, forgetting that he was now arrested and I had nothing to be fearful of,” he said.

Hlabi was arrested for sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and intimidation of the elderly. He made his first court appearance on Tuesday today and a protection order against him was issued.

Presiding Magistrate Thelma Martinez said the abuse against the elderly at the hands of their children and grandchildren has become a growing concern and that the majority of these inhuman acts are driven by substance abuse.

“Since the start of this year, each day I hear mothers, women, and the elderly crying in this courtroom because they have been abused by their partners, brothers, and children. I cannot accept that,” said Martinez.

The matter was postponed to 12 February for address verification and the accused will remain in custody.
