Pirates boss says beating Chiefs is all that matters
- Jose Riveiro says he’s not chasing history with Orlando Pirates, just another Nedbank Cup title.
- Pirates beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 to set up a final clash with rivals Kaizer Chiefs.
Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro says he doesn’t care about records — he just wants to win the Nedbank Cup.
The Buccaneers are into their third straight final after a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium. Kabelo Dlamini scored the only goal in the first half.
Pirates have won the last two Nedbank Cup titles, but Riveiro says it’s not about making it three in a row.
“This one matters,” he said. “The others are a memory.”
He said it’s not about personal glory either. “Usually, we’re competitive. We care about what we achieve, but we don’t think all the time about getting three in a row.”
He added: “It’s nice to be in the final, but when it’s time to go, we go to be competitive. We’re going to win.”
Riveiro said winning again is just part of the job. “I’m not going to say it’s an obligation — but it’s why we are here.”
Looking back at the semi-final, Riveiro said Pirates deserved the win.
“I think we controlled the game very well. We created more than enough to score more than one goal,” he said.
Gallants opened up more in the second half, which gave Pirates more chances to score.
“I think overall it was a good game and we fully deserved to be in the final,” he said.
Pirates will now face old enemies Kaizer Chiefs in the final at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May.
