Police seize millions in drugs after car chase
- Police seized cocaine and 38,000 mandrax tablets worth R4.5-million after chasing a suspicious car in Cape Town’s gang areas.
- Residents say the bust gives hope to families affected by drugs but warn police need community help to catch more dealers.
Flying Squad members caught a 44-year-old man with R4.5 million worth of drugs after a car chase in Cape Town over the weekend.
Police found 38,000 mandrax tablets and 30 bags of cocaine after stopping a car with dark windows in Belhar.
“The members spotted the suspicious vehicle on Robert Sobukwe Road, gave chase, and pulled the car off the road,” said Western Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Malcolm Pojie.
The driver couldn’t explain what was in two wrapped bags and a sealed box in his car. Police discovered the drugs after taking him to the Ravensmead police station.
The police action has brought relief to the community; many of its inhabitants are hooked on illicit substances.
“I hate anyone associated with drugs because my younger brother is on the streets smoking drugs while he has a warm home and people who love him,” said Nosipho Mhlekwa, 50, from Nyanga.
Residents say police need community help to fight dealers.
“Big bosses sent the suspect to deliver the drugs. Now SAPS have done their work, but we also must report drug dealers because they stay with us in our communities. We know them,” said Sibongile Sikade from Khayelitsha.
