President Cyril Ramaphosa said his government is coming up with new plans to improve service delivery in local municipalities.

Speaking during Thursday night’s State of the Nation Address delivered in Cape Town, he said they are implementing measures to address municipal service problems by providing support to local government. This would include professionalising the civil service and ensuring that people with the right skills are appointed to key positions.

“The Presidency, National Treasury and Cogta are working together to enhance technical capacity in local government and to improve planning, coordination and fiscal oversight,” he said.

He said that through the presidential izimbizos held across the country, they have seen how the District Development Model has brought together all spheres of government and key stakeholders to address service delivery challenges.

Ramaphosa described the District Development Model as an effective instrument to enhance cooperative governance and collaboration. “We will continue to broaden and deepen this process,” he said.

His stance on local government comes as an outcry for improved service delivery continues across the country’s municipalities.

Many communities claim that corruption is to blame for the failure to render services.
