PSL boots Royal AM as MaMkhize quietly lets go

  • Royal AM has officially been expelled from the PSL after months of disruption and unpaid debts.
  • MaMkhize stayed silent as the league’s board voted overwhelmingly to kick her team out.

It’s official — Royal AM is no longer part of the Premier Soccer League and Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize didn’t stand in the way.

The PSL’s board of governors met on Thursday and voted to expel the troubled club. TimesLIVE reports that an overwhelming majority backed the decision, bringing an end to one of the most chaotic chapters in South African football.

The league has not yet confirmed what the decision means for relegation and promotion in the Betway Premiership, but the fallout could be huge.

Royal AM hasn’t played since December after Sars seized the club over R40-million in unpaid taxes and appointed a curator. They only played 11 matches this season, while other clubs have played more than double that.

The PSL executive had already recommended that the team be expelled. After Thursday’s vote, the board made it official.

MaMkhize didn’t fight the decision. She had asked to attend the meeting and was expected to apologise to other clubs — but sources say she accepted the outcome.

A planned takeover deal with Global Investments collapsed, leaving the club with no financial lifeline.

The decision will hit players and staff the hardest. The South African Football Players’ Union says it will fight to make sure players are paid and allowed to join other teams.

MaMkhize, meanwhile, has already been spotted in Eswatini wearing Moneni Pirates colours at the Ingwenyama Cup final. The club is not for sale, but insiders say she could still be looking at a new football deal across the border.
