Police have launched a manhunt for suspects who blew up a cash van in Hazyview, Mpumalanga on Wednesday morning.
During the robbery, a shootout ensued with the van’s security officers. Police have confirmed that one of the officers was shot dead and two others were injured.
After the suspects blew open the security van, large sums of cash flew out and passersby scrambled to snatch what they could.
Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the ambush happened in mid-morning.
“Just before 11am on Wednesday, Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene of a cash-in-transit heist and bombing on the R40 between White River and Hazyview in Mpumalanga,” he confirmed.
He said reports from the scene are that an unknown number of armed suspects ambushed the cash van before blowing it up with an explosive device.
“A shoot-out ensued resulting in one security officer sustaining fatal gunshot wounds and two others being left with moderate injuries.
“The man was declared dead on arrival of paramedics whilst his colleagues were treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.”
