SAFA in legal trouble.. again

  • Safa Western Cape leaders were fined R50,000 each for ignoring court orders about the Sasol Women’s League.
  • League sponsors Sasol say they are still trying to find out what went wrong but are committed to women’s football.

The South African Football Association (Safa) is in trouble once more after its Western Cape branch ignored two court orders linked to the Sasol Women’s League.

A total of 14 clubs from the league took Safa to the Western Cape High Court. They claimed the association had failed to follow earlier court orders, especially about who is allowed to play in the league and money they were owed, including funding grants and competition payouts.

According to court documents, the clubs said the football body, led by Danny Jordaan, did not obey rulings made against them on 6 March and 24 March.

Safa Western Cape, the branch’s chairperson Tankiso Modipa, and provincial executive officer Nadia Konstabel – listed as the first, second and third respondents – were each fined R50,000 for contempt of court.

“First, second and third respondents are declared to be in contempt of this court order dated 6th March 2025 and 24th March 2025,” the judgment read.

League sponsors Sasol said they are still in touch with Safa to understand exactly what went wrong.

“Sasol is still in contact with Safa regarding the recent developments at the association,” said Sasol spokesperson Matebello Motloung, as reported by Sunday World.

“As a committed sponsor of women’s football in South Africa, our priority continues to support the growth and development of the women’s game and ensuring players and teams have access to the resources they need.”
