Sars take control of Royal AM over R40-million bill
- Royal AM players and staff didn’t get paid in December after Sars took control of the club over unpaid taxes.
- The club owes former striker Samir Nurkovic R15-million and can’t sign new players because of the debt.
Royal AM’s money troubles have worsened after the South African Revenue Service (Sars) took control of the KwaZulu-Natal club.
Sars has put Jaco Venter in charge of the club’s finances after obtaining a preservation order. This follows raids in November at properties owned by club boss Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize for over R40 million in unpaid taxes.
MaMkhize addressed the crisis on Wednesday: “We’re sorry about not paying our people in December. We know this is hard on them and their families,” she said. “We’re working with Mr Venter to try and get permission to pay everyone.”
The club faces further problems. Fifa has banned them from signing new players because they haven’t paid former striker Samir Nurkovic R15 million in wages.
The situation is so serious that the PSL has postponed Royal AM’s match against Chippa United, which was scheduled for this Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
MaMkhize says she will resolve the problems but hasn’t said when staff will get their money.
“Royal AM has always put our people first, and we’ll keep doing that despite these challenges,” she said. “We thank everyone for being patient while we fix this mess.”
The club promises to keep everyone updated, but for now, Sars is in control of MaMkhize’s club.
