Shivambu says its time to give kings their throne back

- The Afrika Mayibuye Movement says traditional leaders must be part of national and provincial law-making, especially on land and community issues.
- The movement says King Misuzulu’s leadership proves the value of traditional structures and calls for them to become a “fourth sphere” of government.
The Afrika Mayibuye Movement, led by Floyd Shivambu, says the Supreme Court of Appeal ruling that confirmed King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the rightful Zulu monarch is a victory for traditional leadership in South Africa.
The movement said the court’s decision gives traditional leaders more strength and helps King Misuzulu’s voice bring people together.
“Traditional leaders, led by the example of His Majesty King Misuzulu, are trusted custodians of our heritage,” the movement said. “They are more accessible and culturally rooted than many state institutions and play a vital role in resolving disputes and building unity.”
The group now wants bold constitutional changes to give traditional leaders law-making powers. It is calling for a formal role for traditional leaders in provincial and national legislation – especially on land, culture and community development.
It also wants stronger traditional courts that work hand-in-hand with the formal justice system.
Afrika Mayibuye believes traditional structures should be recognised as a fourth sphere of government under Chapter 12 of the Constitution, with proper funding and full authority.
The movement says this would close the gap between modern governance and African cultural values and promote lasting social stability.
It added that the Zulu monarchy under King Misuzulu has the support of the people and can lead the way in showing how traditional and modern systems can work together.
