‘Standards are high’ – Nurkovic on Mzansi football

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Samir Nurkovic has had his say on the standard of football in South Africa five years after making a move to the country.

The TS Galaxy forward, who first joined Chiefs in 2019 after leaving Slovak side KFC Kormano, said that he is impressed by the quality of football being played in the PSL.

“The standard of South African football ... we showed now when we were in the mid-season camp in Turkey,” Nurkovic told FARPost.

“We played there with some really good clubs from Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovenia and we scored a lot of goals. That’s showing you the standard and the level of South African players.”

The 31-year-old added that despite the level of football in SA “hardly” being found in other countries, more focus should be put on the development side of the game.

“I’ve played in a couple of countries in the world. The talent that South Africa has you hardly find anywhere else.

“The speed, agility and the way they control the ball. You just need somebody to point you in the right direction and say, ‘Now you need to do this, and this is what you need to do to be successful.’ And the players need to follow that.”
