Sundowns could face the world’s best at Club World Cup
- Sundowns could play against football giants Real Madrid or Manchester City at next year’s Club World Cup.
- South African champions avoid Messi’s team but might face European powerhouse in a 32-team tournament.
It could go either way in the three pots draw for Mamelodi Sundowns at next year’s Fifa Club World Cup in America.
The Brazilians might play against football giants Real Madrid or Manchester City. The draw happens on Thursday and Sundowns are in pot four.
That means they won’t play against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami or African team Esperance.
But the Brazilians could end up in the same group as some of the world’s top teams from pot one.
These include European champions Real Madrid, world champions Manchester City, German giants Bayern Munich and French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain.
Sundowns could also face big teams from Pot Two like England’s Chelsea, Germany’s Borussia Dortmund, Italy’s Inter Milan and Juventus, or Spain’s Atletico Madrid.
Famous South American clubs like Argentina’s Boca Juniors and Brazil’s Botafogo from pot three might also be Sundowns’ opponents.
This bigger Club World Cup will have 32 teams. It’s Sundowns’ second time at this tournament. They lost both games in Japan in 2016 when they were African champions.
Coach Manqoba Mngqithi will hope for better results if he’s still in charge next year.
Former Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena could also be at the tournament with his new Moroccan team Wydad Casablanca if he stays there for the season.
