Super Sunday magic for Salah and early concerns for Amorim
Liverpool went eight points clear of Manchester City after a thrilling 3-2 win over Southampton while Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich.
After going ahead through Dominik Szobozslai, the Reds saw their hosts get back into proceedings through goals from Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes.
The Saints’ lead would only last ten minutes before Liverpool’s main man would be at the centre of the magic — yet again.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man: Salah equalised after a brilliant ball from Ryan Gravenberch before snatching all three points with a perfectly taken penalty kick.
The result, despite a below par performance, was exactly what Arne Slot’s side needed heading into a tough week that will see them take on Real Madrid and Manchester City.
The task of facing the holders in the Champions League on Wednesday will be as tough as it gets.
However, Salah was already being quizzed on the prospect of going 11 points clear in the league should they get one over Pep Guardiola’s side next Sunday. And the ever ambitious Egyptian made his intentions clear.
“Hopefully we keep going in that direction. We have a game against them so hopefully, we win it and go 11 points clear,” Salah told reporters.
“Man City is Man City. They have a bad time now but they have great players.”
Elsewhere, Ruben Amorim took charge of his first Manchester United game as they made the trip to Ipswich.
All may not have went to plan for the Red Devils as they only managed a point after Marcus Rashford’s goal was canceled out by Omari Hutchinson.
The new boss was clear about his concerns, though, and admitted that he required time to understand the players.
“There are two ways. We can change nothing and win games, and then be in the same position this time next year. Or we can adapt from the first moment. We will have problems, but we have to better next year at this same stage,” he said post-match.
“Decision making is a concern because we are doing some things not in the right moment – that is something we have to address.”
“People talk about the 3-4-3 – that is not a concern, but the understanding of the game we have to improve.”
“My feeling is they want this, but they don’t know how to get it. We will need a lot of time to work out the players.”
